    Description

WIEGAND & SNOWDEN BRASS SCARIFICATOR & BLEEDER ,PHILA. PA. c. 1800 Shipped with USPS First Class.(Used )
Up for auction is an antigue bloodletting spring lancet , cased and manufactured by Wiegand & Snowden , Phila. Pa. circa 1840 This cased spring lancet is unique because there were very few manufacturers in the United States at that time period that were producing this item or other medical surgical instruments .Bloodletting instruments such as spring lancet or scarificators were mostly imported from Europe .
This spring loaded lancet is marked on the brass body of the fleem “ Wiegand & Snowden Phila, Pa. “ The fleem is it original case which is lined with red velvet felt & the top of the case is covered with Moroccan red leather .
The condition of the spring lancet is good considering it’s age . Wheather the spring mechanism of the lancet is working is uncertain because I never tried to use it. The large single blade of lancet is pitted with no cracks or breakage. The case for the spring loaded lancet has some flaws because of its age and wear and tear. The photos of the case shown will point out some of those flaws
. I find this Wiegand & Snowden spring loaded lancet historically interestingbecause the you have a United States company in the early 1800’s that entering the industrial revolution from a rural
    nation
that ‘s starting to product quality American medical instruments to compete with the high regarded European medical instrument manufacturers that are imported to the United States .
This spring lancet by Wiegand & Snowden will make a fantastic addition to the collector of antique medical instruments.
Seller’s note: Please carefully examine the photos to determine the condition of item!
